Okie so this wasn't really shopping per se since I did not buy anything, though I was highly tempted to at my favourite shop - Zakka House. But they unfortunately did not have a new My Melody Makeup Case for me to buy and the one left there had a huge stain down her face. Boohoo. :(
The real reason we went to the Chinatown Markets was due to my Food Connoisseur Bunny who had some major Bak Kwa cravings. At 4 dollars a slice, it's pretty exorbitant considering the quality but I guess he was able to overlook it.
Since I was a little girl, my parents would buy me Bak Kwa from a brand called Kim Hock Guan in Singapore, and they have since spoilt me for other Bak Kwa brands. They only use sliced pork (whereas other top brands use minced pork) and when you bite into it, it's tough but also chewy and not as fatty.
You can be sure I would buy myself some when I get back, hopefully they have not raised their prices to more than 50 dollars per kilogram by then! 0.0
The photos are arranged in the order they were taken. We walked in, and immediately saw some stalls selling cute beanies and slippers. The lighting and type of wares just brought me back to Hong Kong's Temple Street in an instance! Hmm... I guess I am still morose we are not flying to Hong Kong this July for our annual Shop Like I Have Bill Gates As My Father trip.
Bunny got his Bak Kwa (no, I did not share it with him), and while he was demolishing it, I stopped by Zakka House. As we walked back to the car, I had to take a snap of Luna Park's Ferris Wheel, the lights were so pretty. We also gawked at the long queue for Mamak and I thought the marketing behind The Gentle Dentist was pretty solid.
Dentists do not really faze me. I have had some really gory things done to me in a dentist's chair, but that is a story for another day. ;)

I love china town. Its always so busy and there is always something fun or cute or interesting to look at. AND Om nom bak kwa! now i too have a craving but there is not a single place down here that does it. Grrrrr.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous post lady xx
ouuu my god, i love this kind of photos! (not more than your outfits, but well they're also so so nice) i'm always pretty fascinated by cities at night ♥
ReplyDeleteand i also wanted to tell you that your blog has developed so well the last time. although it was already very good at the beginning!
please keep on blogging this way :)
I love those slippers + they look so cute and warm.
ReplyDeleteWyetha
wow lots of cute stuff! what is Bak kwa anyway? is it like a snack food? what ever it is, it sounds yummy to me.
ReplyDeleteOooh I had to google what Bak Kwa was but then I recognised it when the cantonese name for it came up. I love that stuff too! I miss the days when relatives used to bring it over to the UK as souvenirs. Damn strict custom rules that mean no meat products. Boo! This means that I eat my fill when I go back out to Asia.
ReplyDeleteLove the China town photos!
lol.. gentle dentist! the irony! i am a dentist too..
ReplyDeletehugs,

Oohhh you finally got to Chinatown markets! :)
ReplyDeleteI didnt know what the flat meat was called but now I do thanks to you!
I used to have it when I was little too and remember it being quite expensive per kg?
The line for mamak is insane right? I genuinely don't think it's THAT good. Ive eaten there twice and it is pretty similar to street food in Malaysia but I've also been to Malaysia a few times! That's probably why I don't see what the rave is about lol.

Those are seriously adorable stuff. :) And that dentist's clinic is cute. I never liked dentists myself...they're my least favorite doctors in the world. Haha! Do share your stories!

haha..the slippers are so cute. You love Bak Kwa? It's funny we have it here all year long, nobody eats them, and then there's always this crazy queue at every chinese new year. People actually send their workers to queue for them. It's insane! Haven't tried Kim Hock Guan, Lim Chee Guan is the one with the insane queues. Haha..I just saw a Gentle Dentist at Jurong East recently. Looks like they expanded their business.

Addie, I had to google "Bak Kwa" but when I saw pics, I knew EXACTLY what you were referring to. Oh my gosh.I LOVEEEEd it when I was a kid, which was probably the last time I had it. Now, I will have to go search high and low for a place that carries it here in small city, Midwest. hahaha. I can't believe you didn't buy anything at Zakka House. Just by looking at the window, I am sure I would have gotten at least one thing. Maybe some cute candy? hahaha.
